You cannot look at being filled with the Holy Spirit in terms of quantity or volume. He is not in us in a half-liter, liter, 10 liters or 30 liters. He is a person. He is either in you or not. If you have the HS, then you can be filled. The amount of control the Holy Spirit has over you depends upon the amount of control that you have given Him. It is entirely a question of how much space in your heart and soul that you give Him. Not how much He has taken. He is already there. The principal obstructions to the amount of space available for His presence are hurts, resentments, hostility, anger, revenge, unforgiveness, fears, worries and various repetitive sins. That is not a complete list, but it should give you the idea. Any or all of these obstruct the Holy Spirit’s ability to control us. The presence or absence of these obstructions are the determining factor for how much we are filled with the Holy Spirit. The fewer the obstructions, the greater the filling.
Worship is the best method to reveal the obstructions that we have. Whenever you worship or otherwise get in the Spirit, one of these obstructions will emerge and face-off with you. (your soul consists of your mind, will and emotions, the playground of your being) It becomes a glaring distraction from your worship and a deterrent to the work of the Holy Spirit within you. At the same time, this distraction has revealed itself as an obstruction to the Holy Spirit. But rather than let it distract you, let it be a divine encounter and opportunity to deal with it. Face it, confront it, place it before God. Deal with it. Get rid of it. Throw it out. Right then, you can choose God over wallowing in your personal pain.
The most frequent and also the most destructive of these distracting thoughts is the memory of someone who hurt you, offended you, rejected you, insulted you or the like. Just the thought of this person sends you into a tail-spin of resentment, anger, unforgiveness and your soul enters that dark place. This is obviously something that you must deal with and eliminate if you want to ever get on with God. So, do it. Get rid of it completely.
You may think that this hurtful thing has arisen in your mind while you are worshipping because the devil wants to distract you from worship. That may be, but it also could be the Holy Spirit revealing to you a long-time obstacle that is keeping you from being filled with the Holy Spirit. Either way, the proper response is to deal with it to rid your heart and soul of this obstruction. Free yourself of it permanently.
Jesus said:
“true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth”. (John 4:23-24)
Praise can come from your soul, but worship must come from your spirit. When it does, the Holy Spirit joins with your spirit and a divine supernatural process is engaged. That “little man” within you stands up and joins with the Holy Spirit to worship God. It is a divine connection and a necessary one for true worship in spirit and truth.
The first step in my personal journey to heaven began with an hour of worship every day. I was excited about beginning this journey, so it wasn’t difficult or a burden for me. But I have noticed that it is very difficult for most people. Even when they are with me during my time of worship, not a single one has been able to complete a full hour. So, if you cannot do an hour, then do whatever you can. But worship you must. Jesus said that you must do it. After 2.5 months of this, the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, “I want us to become friends.” I asked, “How do we do that?”. He said, “You must gain My trust.” That is when the process of rooting out the dirt from my heart and soul began. Every day, the Holy Spirit would expose some dirt to me for us to throw out. It was the most fruitful time in my life. Do it.
Christians are always asking God, “What do You want me to do?” when they should be asking “Who do You want me to be?”. Most are not prepared to do what God has for them to do. They are a long way from being prepared. Your calling is much higher than you are currently prepared to perform.
